Longstone, located in the shadow of HMP Edinburgh and home to a major Lothian Buses depot, has been a thriving Edinburgh neighbourhood since the end of WWII.
Longstone grew and expanded greatly in the 1950s and 1960s, and it now comprises primarily of post-war, mid-century housing, including flats and semi-detached houses.
We looked through our photo archives and found some beautiful photos of Longstone and its residents throughout the last seven decades.

1. Off-road bus
In April 1960, this number 21 bus crashed on Longstone Road, mounting the pavement and knocking over a pole.

This aerial view of Longstone was taken in April 1964, and many of the structures are still standing today, including the Scotmid supermarket building, top right, the historic Longstone Inn hotel, top centre and the church at the bottom.
