Sheffield retro: 45 of the best photos showing what 80s life was really like.

It was a decade of enormous technical progress, from the Walkman to the World Wide Web.

However, the 1980s were not all about improvement, with the miners’ strike, the Falklands War, and the Poll Tax protests shaping the political scene.

Live Aid brought hope, while the premiere of EastEnders and Charlene and Scott’s wedding on Neighbours provided escape to a community in need of some light comfort.

In Sheffield, the Ski Village offered our adrenaline fix, Millhouses Lido was the place to be on a hot summer day, and Castle Market was packed with bargain seekers.

This retro photo gallery depicts them and other vanished attractions throughout the city, including popular taverns, stores, and clubs from the 1980s.

Kylie is photographed dazzling revellers at the iconic Roxy nightclub, Bruce Springsteen is seen doing an incredible act at a packed Bramall Lane Stadium, and a new TV series is being recorded in Hillsborough.

This collection of iconic photographs from the decade includes Fletchers bakery, the famed Stone House bar, the ancient Silver Blades ice rink, and the opening of Crystal Peaks shopping mall.

Everyday moments include a sad farewell to a much-loved schoolteacher, bathers splashing around at Attercliffe Swimming Baths, and a world record-breaking Yorkshire pie.

Do these photos bring back any memories for you, and what do you think were the best and worst things about life in Sheffield during the 80s?
