Hearts and Hibs’ stance given major backing after Rangers-Celtic decision.
McInnes appreciates full allocations in the face of other cuts.
Derek McInnes, Hearts’ head coach, has praised the Gorgie side and their rivals Hibs for keeping full away ticket allocations for the Edinburgh derby.
Both sides of the capital have reserved the Roseburn Stand at Tynecastle and the South Stand at Easter Road for away fans, despite reducing capacity for other clubs, including the Old Firm.
A schism between Celtic and Rangers resulted in away supporters being barred from Glasgow derbies, and even the later agreement for a 4% away allocation falls short of capturing the essence of the game.
Hibs and Hearts are admired for their mutual understanding. Even if some seats are destroyed by away fans at Easter Road or Tynecastle, the teams have agreed not to punish one another by lowering ticket allocations.
The end result is an atmosphere that is tough to match anywhere in Scottish football. “I credit both clubs for that,” McInnes stated ahead of his first derby as manager against Leith tomorrow.
“We’ve seen that in Glasgow with the tit-for-tat thing, but the fans create these types of games, which is what you want, so it’s fantastic that both teams realise that. Obviously, Hibs are the same at Tynecastle.
“As a supporter and employee of your club, we all know the importance of having support. It’s the same three points as every other three points, but we’re well aware of the goodwill and kickback you can get from winning a derby game. That’s the same worldwide.”
People inside and outside the club emphasised the significance of the derby from the time he stepped inside Tynecastle to take over as manager of Hearts.
“Yes, there are those who have been here for a long time.”That’s the way it should be,” McInnes stated.”And the new guys who come in are informed.
Every day, there are fans on the streets, and when you meet them at events, they say, ‘Just beat Hibs.’ It will be the same on the other end. It’s just the way things are. That is something we must appreciate.
We have to sense it. “That is what it means to the supporters.” Hearts won McInnes’ first derby at Tynecastle in October, with to Craig Halkett’s 90th-minute goal.
Hibs head coach David Gray is yet to experience derby defeat as a manager at Easter Road.
