Sheffield retro: 36 photos capturing life in 1987, including lost toy shops, lido and cinema.
These photographs will make you nostalgic for the 1980s.
They provide a snapshot of life in Sheffield in 1987, featuring some of the city’s most popular attractions at the time.
Do you recall Hamley’s toy shop on The Moor, Zodiac toys, or, most notably, the beloved Redgates, often known as Yorkshire Disneyland?
They’re all featured in this retro photo gallery, which also includes the lost lido at Millhouses Park, the historic Odeon Cinema at what was once the Gaumont, and much more.
Emlyn Hughes, the football great, is shown opening Orchard Square retail mall; a young Naseem Hamed, the subject of a big new biopic, is pictured with his classmates; and the winners of that year’s Miss Sheffield Star contest pose for the camera.
Some of the largest events of the 1980s are also caught, including the Lord Mayor’s Parade, which drew massive crowds, the Sheffield Marathon, the Star Walk, and the Milk Run.
This nostalgic journey also includes lost taverns, striking steelworkers, and a stunning Christmas lights show.
While the majority of the photographs depict how the city looked nearly 40 years ago, one shows how different it may have looked if plans for a massive underground parking park beneath Sheffield’s Peace Gardens had gone forward.
Do these photographs bring back any pleasant memories of the 1980s for you?
