Sheffield retro: 23 photos take you back to golden age of famous streets, when they were thronged.
These nostalgic images reflect a golden age for a collection of iconic Sheffield streets, when they were bustling with shoppers.
They show throngs of people exploring shops and market stalls, or pausing for a post-work pint at the pub. Haymarket, Exchange Street, King Street, and Dixon Lane appear substantially different today than they did in these throwback images from the 1960s and 1970s.
The region, which originally included shops such as Hornes, BHS, Woolworths, and Woolco department stores, as well as Castle Market, Setts Market, and Castlefolds Market, is now quieter than it was back then.
There are plans to rebuild the district on the outskirts of the city centre and Castlegate, but much work remains to be done to recreate the liveliness captured in these vintage photos.
