A person died after being struck by a train on a railway line in Leicestershire.
British Transport Police (BTP) stated police were dispatched to the Leicester railway line at 4.43 a.m. today (Thursday, January 15) in response to reports of a casualty on the tracks.
BTP officers and paramedics responded, but a statement revealed that a person was tragically pronounced deceased on the site. According to a BTP official, the occurrence is not considered suspicious.
A report will be submitted for the coroner. The lines between Loughborough and Leicester were blocked as emergency personnel responded to the site.
The incident had a considerable impact on Thursday morning commuters, since CrossCountry and East Midlands Railway trains were also affected. The interruption impacted trains on the London St Pancras/Nottingham/Sheffield and Leicester/Nottingham routes.
Trains between Loughborough and Leicester were cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. The line between Loughborough and Leicester has been reopened.
However, East Midlands Railway stated that there will be delays and changes to services while they try to restore the promised timetable. Trains may still be delayed for up to 45 minutes, altered, or cancelled, with disruption predicted until 10 a.m.
Earlier today, an East Midlands Railway spokeswoman stated, “We are sad to report that a person has been hit by a train.” This occurred between Loughborough and Leicester, and it is affecting East Midlands Railway trains on the London St Pancras International / Nottingham / Sheffield and Leicester / Nottingham lines.
According to a National Rail spokeswoman, “trains running between Loughborough and Melton Mowbray / Leicester may be cancelled, revised, or delayed by up to 60 minutes.”
