Ipswich interest in Azeez shows our strength – Neil.
Millwall head coach Alex Neil believes that fighting off interest from Ipswich Town in attacker Femi Azeez demonstrates the club’s strength in the race for Premier League promotion.
The Tractor Boys identified the 24-year-old as a significant target during the January transfer window, but were unable to woo him away from The Den.
“I think what [message] it sends to people is the fact that we’re in a really good spot,” Neil told BBC Radio London.
“We do not have to sell any of our players. We are one point behind Ipswich, who have expressed interest in our player.
As a squad game, we need to ensure our side has strength and depth in all areas and is not lacking in certain areas.
“So I think it shows everybody that as a club we’re in a strong position.”
Neil praised James Berylson as a “great owner” who “wants us to do well” and is fully focused on the Lions achieving top-flight football for the first time since 1990.
“He wants us to fight and be at the top end of the division, but there’s also a business behind that,” Neil said.
“There’s times where the business becomes more prominent and important, when we’re needing to sell and maybe generate some cash.
“There are times when the football club is striving for success and retaining its best players is more important.
“And we’re certainly at this moment in time focused on purely what we can achieve this year.”
