‘Football humbles you’ – Millwall boss Alex Neil issues warning ahead of Sheffield Wednesday clash.
Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s dismal Championship record, Alex Neil refuses to let his squad overlook them.
Wednesday visit the Lions this weekend in Barry Bannan’s first game back at Hillsborough since his departure last month, and they are big favourites to make the play-offs this year.
The hosts, meanwhile, have not won since September and have gone an extended period without scoring a goal, with relegation predicted within the next week or so. They are at the bottom of the table with -7 points and will face Millwall, who have lost only one of their last nine games.
Neil witnessed his team’s close 1-0 victory over the Owls in November, so he knows what to expect from Henrik Pedersen’s side, and he maintains that it will not be easy for his players.
“We won’t get ahead of ourselves,” he told NewsAtDen. “One thing about football is that it humbles you very quickly. When you think everything is going well, and we’re all terrific, you usually fall flat on your face and lose a game that others expect you to win.
This weekend will undoubtedly fall into that category for us, in the sense that there will be a strong expectation that we will simply go there, show up, and win the game.

“We know that will not be the case. It is going to be a tough match. They won’t want to lose. They just suffered a crushing setback in their last game. We worked incredibly hard at home to win 1-0. This very possibly be the same. We’ll have to work incredibly hard to win this game.
“I understand the narrative surrounding it. I understand your feelings regarding the game. We will take this game very seriously.”
Millwall might move up to third place if they beat Wednesday and other results go their way this weekend, but the host side is merely playing for pride – and avoiding going a whole season without winning a league game at Hillsborough.
