Paul Merson singles out Leeds United ‘X-Factor’ star after Chelsea comeback draw.

One Leeds United player has received acclaim for his recent improvement in form.

Paul Merson believes Brenden Aaronson adds a critical ‘X-Factor’ to the Leeds United squad when he plays confidently.

Aaronson has had a spectacular turnaround at Leeds this season, with calls for him to be axed in the autumn fading entirely. The American’s return of three goals and an assist in his last nine games has guaranteed his place on Daniel Farke’s teamsheet and earned the praise of those who previously wanted him benched.

Aaronson’s performance in this week’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea was not his greatest, but he remained a threat to opposing defenders and is gaining influence. With a respite in Premier League play for the FA Cup this weekend, the 25-year-old’s development has been emphasised.

During the week’s Sky Sports coverage, presenter Simon Thomas praised Aaronson for Leeds’ comeback tie. He said: “Leeds were 2-0 down and on course for defeat against Chelsea on Tuesday night, but a remarkable comeback saw the Yorkshire club leave Stamford Bridge with a point.”

“It was a performance to be proud of, and it demonstrates how far Farke’s team has come since a sequence of six defeats in seven games put him under fire in November. Aaronson has been one of their standout performances throughout that period, telling Johnny Phillips that “this Leeds team can compete with anyone on their day.”

Paul Merson praises Brenden Aaronson

Merson specifically mentioned Aaronson, saying, “I like him. He’s lively. My issue with him is that he did not perform well against Arsenal. And that lowered his confidence a little. But, yes, I like him.

“I believe you need that type of player on your team. You need a little X-Factor, a little energy, and he’s done exceptionally well. “I am a huge fan of his.”

Aaronson will have a well-deserved rest as Leeds United face Birmingham City in the FA Cup later today. Daniel Farke benched his attacking midfielder in the previous round’s 3-1 win over Derby County and is expected to rotate again, with Premier League survival still a priority.

Leeds will play away to Aston Villa next weekend before hosting championship challengers Manchester City later this month. These games conclude a difficult time for the Whites, following which their schedule becomes easier on paper.

Farke’s team reached the 30-point mark following the 2-2 draw at Chelsea, with three wins and one tie bringing them up to 40. The Whites still have Sunderland, Brentford, Wolves, Burnley, and Brighton to face at Elland Road.
