Wigan Athletic urged to strike summer deal with Coventry City – Sky Blues “wouldn’t really need the money”
Wigan Athletic urged to strike summer deal with Coventry City – Sky Blues “wouldn’t really need the money”.
After a robust summer of recruitment activity, Wigan entered the season with ambitions of pushing for promotion under manager Ryan Lowe. They were among the early front-runners.
However, the Latics have been pulled into the relegation race after a severe downturn in form over the winter, and Lowe was fired earlier this month following a seven-game winless streak that saw the Lancashire club plummet into the bottom four.
Wigan are now 22nd in the table, two points from safety, and plan to rely on loanee Raphael Borges Rodrigues from Coventry City to prevent relegation.
Rodrigues appeared four times for the Sky Blues in the first few weeks of the season, including two substitute appearances in the Championship, before moving to the Brick Community Stadium on the last day of the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old has one goal in 27 appearances for the Latics this season, 20 of which came from the start, but he was frequently played in an unfamiliar wing-back spot by Lowe in his preferred back three formation.

When asked if the club may recruit Rodrigues permanently this summer, FLW’s Wigan Athletic fan pundit Corey Bissell said he would want to see the winger return on a full-time basis, but the transfer could depend on whether Coventry achieves promotion to the Premier League.
“I think Raphael could definitely shine if a manager who plays wingers is brought in,” Corey told FLW.
“I don’t know if there’s scope for a permanent move, I think that depends on Coventry.
“If they are promoted to the Premier League, they will most likely be more willing to let him leave permanently because they will no longer need the money.
“If they aren’t promoted, I could see him being loaned out again and cashed in on after a second loan. I like him and think he’s a decent player.”
“He’s gone off the boil lately, but so has most of our squad. He had a really nice spell around the Christmas period or just before that and was probably our best performer during that time.”
“He’s a raw talent, but there’s certainly talent there.
“I’d gladly take him on a permanent basis, especially if we bring in a manager who allows him to play in his natural position and attack, rather than having to come back and defend.” “But to his credit, I will say he is very dogged in defending, and he does seem to enjoy it, so fair play to him.”
Frank Lampard, Coventry City comments could hint at Wigan Athletic transfer disappointment

Frank Lampard’s comments on Coventry City could indicate Wigan Athletic’s transfer disappointment.
Rodrigues was mostly disregarded by Lampard after taking over at Coventry last season, but did feature for his parent club in the early stages of the current campaign before being loaned out to Wigan Athletic.
In December, Lampard expressed satisfaction with Rodrigues’ performance with the Latics, stating that he was not concerned about him playing out of position as a wing-back.
While it will be difficult for Rodrigues to break into the Sky Blues’ squad once he returns to the CBS Arena, it is clear that Lampard is keeping a close eye on his progress in Lancashire, and he may decide to give him a chance next season, which would be a major setback for Wigan’s hopes of signing him permanently.
