Lyall Cameron reacts to ‘No Old Firm loans’ banner in first interview since move from Rangers to Aberdeen
Lyall Cameron reacts to ‘No Old Firm loans’ banner in first interview since move from Rangers to Aberdeen.
Lyall Cameron, a loan Rangers midfielder, responds to the ‘No Old Firm Loans’ banner raised at Pittodrie ahead of his Aberdeen debut, as the 23-year-old vows to help the Dons retain the Scottish Cup.
Midfielder Lyall Cameron admits he expected some backlash after seeing the ‘No Old Firm Loans’ banner raised at Pittodrie ahead of his Aberdeen debut.
Cameron said in his first press interview after signing on loan from Rangers till the end of the season: “I’m not going to hide away” from the banner.
However, he is overjoyed that the vast majority of the Red Army quickly supported him, and he hopes to repay that faith by helping the Dons retain the Scottish Cup.
A small group of fans unfurled the banner in the Red Shed before Cameron made his Dons debut in the Scottish Cup last month, defeating Raith Rovers 1-0.
Some fans were irritated that Aberdeen had signed a player on loan from rivals Rangers with no option to buy.
‘I’m not going to hide away from that’
Lutz Pfannenstiel, Aberdeen’s sporting director, attempted to make Cameron’s move permanent or with a buyout clause, but Rangers declined.
However, spectators praised the 23-year-old as he took his first corner in front of the Richard Donald Stand just minutes into his debut.
Cameron went to a standing ovation from the Red Army after being substituted late in his debut.
Cameron stated, “With me coming here, we expected some hostility from the supporters.“But as soon as I arrived here, the people rallied around me because I was simply trying to do my best. “I want to win games, therefore I work hard and do my best for them.
“My goal is to make it pleasurable for supporters to watch. “I appreciate their help, and I hope I can repay them because it meant a lot to me.””Obviously, everyone saw (the banner) when I first came out onto the pitch for my debut.
“I am not going to hide from that. I saw and acknowledged it. “But we were expecting that.
Cameron made his debut in Aberdeen’s first step in retaining the Scottish Cup, which they won at Hampden last May.
Cameron’s Scottish Cup target
Aberdeen will meet in-form Motherwell in the fifth round on Wednesday at Pittodrie.Motherwell defeated the Dons 2-0 in the Premiership on Sunday at Fir Park, extending the Reds’ league skid.
Aberdeen have only won once in their last nine games, and finishing in the top six is no longer a realistic goal.
Cameron stated, “The boys who were here last year said it was one of the best experiences of their lives, winning the Scottish Cup.”
“So, I’d want to be a part of that, and perhaps go on to win it again. “This is a gigantic game.
“Everyone wants to have a good cup run going.”We’ll do our best to win it. “You want to play games that are as crucial as possible since they advance you to the next level.
Aberdeen rebuilt its team during the January transfer window, and Cameron was one of seven new players signed.
Motherwell weaknesses to exploit
However, the Reds have only won one of their last nine Premier League games. Aberdeen have faced Motherwell four times this season, losing three and drawing one.
In September, the Steelmen defeated the Reds 1-0 at Pittodrie, knocking them out of the League Cup in the quarter-finals.
