Sir Bobby Charlton Hailed Celtic Icon as ‘One of Best Strikers’ in Football History.
Many people consider Sir Bobby Charlton to be the best player England has ever produced. For many Manchester United fans, he is the club’s greatest player, scoring 249 goals in 758 matches.
Because he is such a famous character in the game, his opinions on other legendary players often garner attention. On one occasion, he singled out a Celtic icon, hailing him as one of the best attackers in football history.
That player was Bobby Lennox.
Sir Bobby Charlton’s Praise For Bobby Lennox
While newer fans may not remember his name, Lennox was a standout player in his era. Only three British footballers have topped his record-breaking 25 major trophies.
He was also a major player of Celtic’s renowned Lisbon Lions team that won the European Cup in 1967. The Scotland international scored 277 goals in 586 appearances for Celtic, making him the club’s second-highest scorer ever.
With such a record, it’s not surprising that he garnered accolades from stars of his era, including Charlton, who once remarked:
He would spend the majority of his career with Celtic, except for one year in America with the Houston Hurricane in 1978. Charlton sent a moving tribute to Lennox after he was honoured with a statue to commemorate his achievements.
