Millwall boss after Birmingham win: ‘When we’re at it, we can beat any team’.
ALEX Neil feels Millwall’s 3-0 victory over Birmingham City demonstrated his team’s ability to defeat anyone on their day.
The Blues were unbeaten in nine games into the meeting at The Den, but they were outmatched by a Lions side that had successfully recovered from a 3-1 loss to Portsmouth four days prior.
Femi Azeez opened the score with a beautiful volley before hitting the post from a free kick five minutes later, with Tristan Crama reacting quickly to fire in the rebound and double Millwall’s lead before halftime.
Within minutes of the restart, the Lions doubled their lead when Crama cut back Azeez’s free kick into the six-yard box, and Cooper scored from close range.
Birmingham were down to ten men in the final 30 minutes after Jhon Solis was dismissed for two bookings.
Millwall comfortably finished the game, securing a critical three points. “I think we needed to put one of our best performances in to beat Birmingham,” Neil told me. “That was my pre-game perspective.
“I think we gave one of our greatest performances, at least for the first sixty minutes, until the man was sent out, and then we tried to preserve energy and made a few of changes.
We could certainly move the ball better at that moment, but they have nothing to lose, so they’re throwing people at it while leaving your full-back free, so you have to risk the ball to find them and then double up along the flanks.
“But we should try to score at the end. Camiel has an excellent chance of making it four. All in all, it was an excellent performance.
We wanted a reaction for the weekend, and we got it. It demonstrates that when we are at our best, we can beat any team.”
