Farewell to phone at iconic Sheffield city centre phone booth site outside Town Hal.
It is one of the few old-style phone boxes in Sheffield’s city core.
However, the actual phone in the traditional-style red box at the end of Surrey Street, near Sheffield Town Hall, is to be removed, according to a notice posted in the booth.
There are two old-style phone booths near the corner of Surrey Street and Fargate, as well as the city’s final green police box.
One of the phone boxes is already permanently locked. However, BT has now fitted the second box with a note inside that states: “It’s time to remove this payphone.

“Why? We discovered that not enough people utilise it to justify maintaining it.
“So we have stopped the service ahead of taking the payphone out completely, But in the meantime you can still call 999 and 112.”There is no indication that the phone booth will be removed; nonetheless, it will no longer have a phone.
According to a BT representative, “With 98% of the adult population using a mobile phone and significant improvements to mobile coverage, there has been a massive decline in the use of payphones across the UK.”
“We are continuing to assess our remaining payphone estate, eliminating those that are no longer in use in accordance with Ofcom’s amended guidance on payphone removals.
“We continue to encourage communities to adopt phone boxes that are no longer in use as part of our ‘Adopt a Kiosk’ program, even as we invest in more modern future-fit infrastructure like Street Hubs, which are designed to provide a wide range of benefits to local communities, including free ultra-fast Wi-Fi, phone calls, rapid device charging, real-time public information, and a dedicated 999 calling button for emergencies.”
