Liam Thompson makes exciting Derby County promise ahead of the 2025/26 season, John Eustace has made one difference.

It’s just over three weeks until the new Championship season begins, and Derby County is stepping up their preparations for 2025/26.

Patrick Agyemang’s transfer to the Rams was officially confirmed on Tuesday evening, and fans are excited. Meanwhile, three Championship sides, including Derby, have expressed interest in John Egan.

However, with Curtis Nelson returning from injury and Danny Batth leaving Blackburn Rovers for Pride Park, there will be questions about whether Egan is required.

Nonetheless, the East Midlands club has a promising year ahead, and Liam Thompson, who recently signed a new two-year contract, is eager to get started.

Liam Thompson explains why he feels different at Derby County in 2025/26

Derby’s turnaround under Eustace was sensational last season, with the Rams surviving on the final day after appearing dead at the start of February.

Thompson played a key role in that success, and after being named the Rams’ Young Player of the Season, the 23-year-old is hoping for even more in 2025/26.

He stated (via Derby County): “Obviously, there are new challenges now that it is pre-season, and the gaffer has the entire pre-season. “So he’ll be bringing in players that he wants.

But, as I previously stated, starting with last season, it will always be important to me. “I believe that under this gaffer, I can develop and improve. I wouldn’t want to play football anywhere else.”

Liam Thompson has to add goals to his game

While it is clear that Thompson has made significant progress at Derby over the last few months, one thing remains lacking: goals.

He has only scored three senior goals in his career and has yet to score in the Championship.

While this is not a critical aspect of his game, there is no doubt that Eustace will want to see the midfielder improve his statistical output, and gaining confidence on the ball in the final third will help. Thompson is a key player for Derby right now, and as an academy graduate, fans will always want to see him progress. This season is the time for him to make that step to the next level.
