Much-changed Luton suffer Carabao Cup first round exit at Coventry City.

Coventry City beat Luton Town 1-0 in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Luton Town’s Carabao Cup campaign came to an end in the first round, as they were defeated 1-0 by Championship side Coventry City tonight.

Bloomfield kept his promise to make changes after starting the season with back-to-back League One wins and promotion to the Championship as an absolute must, changing the entire squad and giving debuts to summer signings Gideon Kodua and Cohen Bramall.

Christian Chigozie, an academy graduate who had been on the bench for Town in the Premier League and is highly regarded at Kenilworth Road, also made his debut.

In place of Josh Keeley, James Shea was given the gloves, while Zack Nelson and Lamine Fanne took over in midfield, with Lasse Nordas and Cauley Woodrow forming a new strike partnership.

Despite the nature of the XI, Town made a promising start, with Kodua bursting through the middle of the pitch and finding Fanne on his right, the midfielder cutting on to his left foot and shooting, only to have it blocked.

On six minutes, City could have done better with a through ball that beat Tom Holmes and sent Ellis Simms away, but Mark McGuinness dragged it wide as he tried to get back and apply pressure.

Luton then had some good possession as Fanne picked up a loose ball and raced into the box before seeing his effort deflected.

With Bramall escaping on the left, he won a corner, which ex-Sky Blues midfielder Liam Walsh sent in, and Woodrow glanced a header just past the post.

On 20 minutes, the forward took possession following good work by Fanne and had a shot from distance that Ben Wilson parried away, before cleverly disguised a pass through to Nordas, who attempted to slide and hook it in but failed to make any kind of serious connection.

City looked dangerous when they went forward, with Simms volleying a cross from the right into the ground and over, before Holmes blocked Kai Andrews’ close-range attempt.

A fairly open contest saw Holmes pick out Bramall with an excellent pass to find Woodrow, whose attempt was charged down to Walsh just outside the box, the midfielder not having his best moment, dragging woefully off target. Bramall’s debut was cut short at halftime after he had not played a minute since last season.

He was replaced by Nigel Lonwijk as Luton continued to play the better football, with Fanne sliding Kodua through as his cross was cleared behind for a corner.

TheWith 57 minutes on the clock, Town’s defence fell apart for the first time and were punished, with Raphael advancing and finding Wright, who had lost McGuinness, his cross-shot beating Shea and being tapped in from a couple of yards by the unmarked Simms.

It almost led to an instant leveller, with Alli’s cross clearing as far as Nelson 20 yards out, but unlike last season, when he scored an absolute screamer at QPR in this competition, he lofted harmlessly over the bar.
However, the hosts made changes, bringing on experienced campaigners such as Jack Rudoni, Matt Grimes, Tatsuhrio Sakamoto, and Brandon Thomas-Asante, with Rudoni almost adding a second from a free kick on 76 minutes, which Shea saved brilliantly down to his right.
With seven minutes remaining, the Hatters were controversially denied a clear chance to equalise when Yates burst clean through on goal, only for referee Leight Doughty to whistle and pull the play back, awarding a free kick to the Hatters, a decision that left Bloomfield stunned.

Simms should have sealed the tie moments later, but he wasted the chance to double his tally by sidefooting over, as well as prodding wide following an impressive Rudoni burst.
During four minutes of stoppage time, the visitors threatened to force a penalty shootout when Walsh’s shot was deflected behind for a corner, which Shea took, but McGuinness met the delivery and Richards flicked it over the top.
