Dunstable Family, Independent Businesses: Weeping Chef – from home father to a street food hero.

He was then employed as a building services contract manager in London. After the birth of his twins, his wife desired to return to work.

Alec decided to become a house father. “When I worked full-time, I did pop-ups on Fridays and Saturdays at the Cheese Kitchen in Bedford.”

That closed, and I started The Weeping Chef, where I cooked thick, handcrafted burgers at various weekend markets. I also catered private dinners at people’s homes.

Twelve years later, Alec found himself in Dunstable with The Street Food Heroes. He was overwhelmed by the reception. “We had a queue even before I had a chance to write on the menu board.

I’m frequently late getting started; everything is made fresh and smoked from scratch. This can sometimes take as long as 18 hours. Aside from the twins, Alec has a younger child.

They are sometimes on the till “each with their own particular style”. This allows Alec to focus on plating the dishes. He enjoys giving his customers the option of customising their meals; taste is a personal matter.

However, this can take time; having a cashier speeds things up. Alec believes that with the continued support of his customers, The Street Food Heroes will continue to provide good food, music, and a positive atmosphere.

As a small, independent business, caring for their customers requires a significant amount of effort.

“It is more intimate than a large restaurant or fast food chain. I truly believe that people enjoy it more.
