Historic Coventry pub set for make-over to ‘keep up with current trends’.

A historic Coventry pub is set for a make-over to ‘keep up with current trends’.

The Bulls Head Inn in Binley Road has a history dating back to 1763 with the old pub occupying two properties before being re-built on adjacent land in the 1920s.

Now Mitchells & Butlers has asked for permission to carry out a refurbishment of the existing fascia, corex signs and re-signwriting of Sizzling logos.

This, it has said in a planning application, is to ‘improve the external appearance to benefit the local residents and help sustain the business.’
Because of the site’s history, it must convince the council that there is no threat to its legacy.

The application makes the following statement: “We believe along with our client that there is no risk with this proposal in regards to the heritage building and its surroundings and feel that this design would not interfere with the overall character and look of the pub which will still remain the same.”

The application states that the proposed improvements have been ‘seriously examined’ and that the bar can be rebuilt without ‘impinging on the traditional character of the property and its surroundings’.It clarifies:

“We believe the proposed alterations to the existing building will also enable the pub to be a safer and more welcoming and appealing building without tarnishing its historical values.” It concludes:

“It is clear that Binley has many historic values and buildings, but it is also a suburb that has evolved throughout time with changes to residential and commercial buildings. The Bulls Head Inn has also evolved to reflect modern trends.
