Man headbutted during protest at Brook Hotel in Bowthorpe.

A guy admits to headbutting another individual following a protest outside a migrant motel near Norwich.

Jak Costello, 25, has been cautioned that all sentence alternatives, including prison, remain on the table.

It comes after a demonstration outside the Brook Hotel in Bowthorpe, which now shelters asylum seekers, on July 26.

He was charged with assault after police reviewed camera evidence of the incident. Costello, of Norwich Road in Costessey, pleaded guilty to one count of assault by beating.

Prosecutors admitted before Norwich Magistrates’ Court that he was not involved in the protest at the time of the incident.

District Judge Matthew Bone stated that he “remained to be convinced” of the idea that the occurrence may have compounded previous charges in a “heightened situation”.

He ordered a pre-sentence review, citing “distressing personal aspects” of the case and “at least some provocation”. Costello was granted unconditional bail until his sentencing on November 28.

For several months, the Brook Hotel has served as a focal point for a succession of rallies and counter-protests, attracting hundreds of people from as far away as Colchester and Leeds.
