Aberdeen cinema announces closure after 20 years as all staff face redundancy risk

Aberdeen cinema announces closure after 20 years as all staff face redundancy risk.

Vue will close its city centre facility in Granite City at the beginning of January.

A large Aberdeen cinema is poised to close its doors after Christmas, making all employees redundant.

Vue will close its city centre site in Granite City on January 5. Staff were notified of the shocking decision at a meeting earlier this month.

It comes after Vue Cinemas revealed that they will not renew their lease for the Aberdeen site. Due to the closure, all 29 employees at the theatre will be laid off immediately following the holiday season.

The cinema has been a part of Aberdeen’s entertainment environment for over 20 years, having been managed by Vue since it opened in 2004. Vue Cinema claimed that their priority is

“all colleagues in Aberdeen”.

In a statement to the Press & Journal, they said: “We can confirm that we will not renew our lease at our Aberdeen location beyond January.

“We have informed all of our colleagues in Aberdeen, who are our top priority, and are discussing with them accordingly.

“We will continue to provide cinemagoers in Aberdeen with the big screen experience, until further notice.”
