The section of river is one of the most desolate parts of the Broads, notorious for severe winds and tidal rushes, and may be especially gloomy in the winter.

Rangers eventually found it two days after it sank and warned boats that it presented a hazard.

Mr Woods was also accused of failing to navigate with care and caution, as well as being under the influence of alcohol or drugs to “such an extent as to render him incapable of taking proper control of the vessel” the day prior.

Tauri is a 66-foot steel-hulled cruiser that officials estimate cost at least £50,000 to recover from the river due to the necessity for a skilled dive team and equipment to lift it from the river bed. Due to the operation’s complications, it took several weeks to be raised.

The authority has previously stated that a “catastrophic failure” of its bilge pump or other equipment resulted in an intrusion of water, leading it to sink.

Mr Woods was ordered by Yarmouth Magistrates‘ Court to pay a total of £1,434 for violating three Broads Authority byelaws.
