Jim Goodwin admits the Dundee United locker room was “very flat” after the opportunity for a thrilling win over Rangers was taken away with eight seconds to play.
The Tangerines were ahead deep into injury time thanks to magnificent strikes from Zac Sapsford and Amar Fatah, sandwiched by a thunderbolt from Jayden Meghoma.
However, referee David Dickinson pointed to the spot for Will Ferry’s challenge on Max Aarons, only seconds after the Tangerines wasted possession deep in the Rangers’ half.
Goodwin had no complaints with the penalty call, remarking that Dickinson officiated the game “particularly well” and noting:
“It’s a genuine attempt to play the ball.” I just think the Rangers player was a little sharper in that time.”
He also downplayed the outrage over a handball in favour of United earlier in the half, saying, “If that type of penalty was awarded against one of my defenders, I think I’d be a little bit disappointed.”
Very, very flat
Nedim Bajrami stepped up and coolly smashed home the penalty to secure a second 2-2 draw versus United this season, both of which came after restoring parity in the latter moments.
“It feels very much like a defeat when you concede so late on in the game,” Goodwin admitted.
“Under those conditions, it’s a difficult one to accept for us as a group, especially after putting so much into the game.
We defended superbly all night, and Rangers’ equaliser came from a fantastic goal in the first half.
“Our custodian made great stops in key situations, and if we get first to that ball on the edge of the box in the 96th minute, I’m fairly sure the referee will blow for full-time, and it’ll be a remarkable night at Tannadice.
“As you can imagine, the dressing room is very, very flat.”
