Metro station gets red and white makeover

Metro station gets red and white makeover.

A Metro station rebranded in the colours of its nearby football club has completed renovations.

Sunderland’s Stadium of Light station’s renowned red and white stripes have been repainted as part of a network-wide repair programme.

The station, which is located close to the Black Cats’ house, had its panels hand painted and the club’s insignia re-added where they had previously flaked away.

Ian Gallagher, head of building service maintenance at operator Nexus, stated, “A few of our team members who carried out the work are Sunderland fans themselves, so they’re particularly proud to see it completed.”

The station was first branded with the Sunderland colours eight years ago

The Stadium of Light Metro station was originally branded with the football club’s colours in the summer of 2017.

It is one of seven stations that have recently undergone improvements, the others being West Monkseaton, Cullercoats, Hadrian Road, Chillingham Road, Manors, and Long Benton.

Councillor Lindsey Leonard, Sunderland City Council’s cabinet member for environment, transport, and net zero, stated that “Sunderland AFC are at the heart of our city, a key part of our heritage and identity, and visually this update clearly marks out and brands the station.”
