Edinburgh travel: Work begins on West Edinburgh Link walking and cycling improvements.

A initiative to improve cycling and walking connectivity in one of Scotland’s major business parks has begun.

The West Edinburgh Link (WEL) will connect South Gyle, Edinburgh Park, and surrounding areas with high-quality walking and cycling pathways, as well as new public spaces, via Glasgow Road, South Gyle, Bankhead, Sighthill, Wester Hailes, and Clovenstone.

The council claims that it will improve connections between local communities and centres of employment, retail, recreation, and education.

It will also connect with other major active transportation routes to the city centre, such as the Union Canal and the Water of Leith Path.

# Contractors Balfour Beatty began work on Phase 1 of the project on Thursday, December 3. It’s expected to last until summer 2026.

Contractors Balfour Beatty began construction on phase one of the project on Thursday, December 3. It’s expected to last until summer 2026.

Future phases will connect with existing bike routes on the A70 and Water of Leith path, extending the route south through Bankhead Avenue, Wester Hailes Road, and Clovenston.

Stephen Jenkinson, the Transport and Environment convener, expressed excitement about the planned work in the city’s west.

We continue to prioritise properly connecting our communities and encourage residents to commute in more sustainable and healthy ways. WEL is a key project in our ambitious City Mobility Plan to keep Edinburgh moving.

“From revitalising active travel provision on the Torwood Path to improving access to Edinburgh College at Sighthill, alongside a host of other improvements, I’ve no doubt that local people will experience real benefits once this transformational project is complete.”
