A look at Lewisham town centre and market street works.

Work on a massive project spanning much of Lewisham town centre is now started, with work on the library also beginning.

The £24 million renovation includes £19 million from the previous government’s levelling-up fund and £5 million from Lewisham Council.

Proposed pavilion

New paving is being installed across the town centre, including the High Street and the market area, and a pavilion will also be created.

One goal is to establish a night market and promote a nighttime economy in the core.

Some sections have already been finished, but a proposed improvement to the areas surrounding the clocktower has yet to begin.

Overall, work was supposed to be completed by September 2025, which, as evidenced by these photographs, was not accomplished.

One of the earliest sections to be completed was at the Premier Inn and Lewis Grove, as seen below.

Earlier stage of work

The southern section of Lewisham High Street was also among the first to see improvements. Last winter, new pavement was installed.

Library changes

Lewisham Library, located at the southern end of the centre, is now being renovated after closing several years ago.

There has been little information available, but a video shows that construction is ongoing this week.

The borough’s main library is expected to return in late 2026, after a three and a half year closure.

Work continues

Once completed, the council promises “improved study spaces, new community spaces, meeting rooms, and workspaces for local businesses and students.” There will also be a new café and hospitality offerings.

A rooftop bar proposal was scrapped due to budgetary considerations. Pavilion is coming here.

Many parts of the High Street will change in the next years when the shopping mall and other buildings are refurbished or demolished to make way for new pedestrian paths. The rendering below depicts both a renovated former Woolworth’s and new construction adjacent.

The image below shows new paving being installed, with Woolwich’s just visible on the right, which is now home to Superdrug.

The H&M building is expected to be demolished.

However, much of this could change with the most specific designs thus far for structures in the far north of the site, closer to Lewisham station and Lewisham Gateway.

A severe flood ravaged the site in March, forcing all people to evacuate. Six months later, it remains cordoned off. Website hosting fees alone cost hundreds of dollars to run the site.
