A1 closures to repair road after fatal crash.
Work will begin to restore a section of the A1 southbound carriageway that has been partially closed since a fatal crash nearly ten months ago.
One lane has been closed over Billing Brook in Water Newton, near Peterborough, after a lorry left the road and crashed into a field on November 1, 2024.
The driver, Daniel Casariu of Luton, died at the scene. Starting September 1, there will be a series of overnight and weekend closures between Wansford and Alwalton in Cambridgeshire.
The crash damaged a culvert supporting the road that is thought to be over 100 years old.
Repairing it has been deemed difficult due to a large water main near the road and the brook, which flows into a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The site is also close to the ruins of a Roman settlement. To protect motorists, the closest lane to the structure has been closed.
The most recent works will temporarily realign the carriageway by moving the central reservation, allowing two lanes of traffic to reopen at a slower speed of 40mph. Full culvert repairs are then scheduled to begin in 2026 or 2027.
Preparation for the realignment will take place from September 1 to 12, with weeknight closures from 21:00 to 05:00 BST.
The main carriageway works will then take place over seven weekends, beginning on September 12 and ending in late October. There will be a full southbound closure between 21:00 on Friday and 05:00 on Monday.
Diversions will be put into place.
