Alex Neil: Why Millwall’s squad is ‘better and stronger’.
Alex Neil believes Millwall’s squad is in a better position than it was last year, noting that more of the group are now club players.
This summer, the Lions signed two former loan players, Josh Coburn and Zak Sturge, as well as Alfie Doughty, Max Crocombe, and Massimo Luongo, on permanent contracts. Goalkeeper Steven Benda joined the club on loan from Fulham, replacing the injured Lukas Jensen, who ruptured his Achilles in April and is out indefinitely.
Three of the newcomers, Coburn, Benda, and Doughty, started Millwall’s 2-1 opening day win over Norwich City, while Luongo came on as a late substitute.
Neil believes his squad is in a strong position with three weeks left in the summer window. “Better and stronger in the fact that we’ve made guys who weren’t ours permanent,” according to Neil. “Josh Coburn is now one of our players.
Zak Sturge is now one of our players. Alfie Doughty has now been added to the mix. Massimo Luongo has been added to the mix. Two goalkeepers have been added to the mix.
“The players on our team are our players. We are not lending to everyone right now. I think we had five loans last year.
We have one this year because Lukas Jensen, our custodian who was fantastic for us last season, has agreed to return. “As a manager, you always want to be as strong as possible at the end of the window.
So, if we could add one or two, that would be fantastic. If we don’t, I believe we have a good squad, and hopefully we can keep them fit.”
