In the last game before the new season, the Premier League champions lost.
At Sunday’s Community Shield, Arne Slot stated that he does not believe Crystal Palace supporters intended to break the minute of silence for the late Diogo Jota.
Due to noise disturbing the silence for Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who both tragically died in a vehicle accident earlier this summer, referee Chris Kavanagh was forced to halt the memorial early at Wembley Stadium.
Other fans booed loudly in response to several yells coming from the east end of the stadium, where the Palace supporters were seated.
After his team’s penalty loss, Slot informed the reporters that he didn’t think the yells were meant to upset or disturb the game.
The manager of Liverpool stated, “I don’t think this was planned, or that this was the idea of the fan that made some noise.”
He might not have realized that it was the minute of silence. He was nevertheless joyful and made an effort to support his team. I don’t think the person or people who created noise had any malicious intentions since I believe the Palace supporters were attempting to calm them down.
“They made an effort to soothe him, but it was also a little boisterous. ‘Hey, what’s happening here?’ was the response from our admirers.
“There isn’t a bad intention behind it, in my opinion, because Diogo and Andre have received a great deal of respect from Crystal Palace fans worldwide. This was unfortunate, or I’m at a loss for words, but I don’t think there was a bad intention behind it.”
The Dutchman is eager to watch how the tributes are received when the Premier League winners meet Bournemouth in the curtain-raiser for the upcoming season on Friday, marking their league comeback at Anfield.
“We’ll see how respectful that is going to be when Bournemouth visits our stadium on Friday,” Slot added.
“It’s also five weeks ago, so that’s why maybe this fan who was just so happy for them to be in the Community Shield that he forgot in a second.”
Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong, two new players, gave the Merseysiders the lead twice in the game, but Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr held them back before they were defeated on penalties.
