Due to the variety of options, the ultimate question is: where is the one location you must see in Sussex? We asked Argus readers to submit the one location they would recommend in the area, and many mentioned a market town. Argus readers frequently highlighted the market town of Arundel.

Discover Sussex characterises it as a historic town with “beautiful listed buildings and scenic surroundings” that attracts tourists.

It goes on to say that visiting the town is a “lovely day out” with plenty of things to do, places to visit, and eat. The website explains why you should visit Arundel: “There’s just something about the historic feel of the town, combined with the independent shops, castle, architecture, and old-world charm, that makes it a town we love to visit.”

“At Christmas, the festive lights also add to the cosy yet stylish atmosphere of the town, which makes it a truly magical place.”

Meanwhile, Visit Arundel claims that the town “captures the essence of heritage, urban chic, and country pursuits, all within a stone’s throw of London”.

It claims that the town offers “something for everyone,” from independent stores and contemporary art galleries to excellent restaurants, cafes, drinking establishments, and sights. The town has previously received high recognition, including being named one of the greatest in the UK.

If you’re looking for things to do, Arundel Castle and Arundel Cathedral are two fantastic options for either a day trip or a longer stay.

If the weather is nice, you may swim at the Arundel Lido or enjoy the sights and sounds of wildlife at the WWT Wetland Centre, which is home to a variety of species including kingfishers, water birds, songbirds, and bats.

Arundel Cathedral overlooks the mediaeval town of Arundel and is worth visiting. Arundel also has several fantastic independent stores and restaurants.

However, Arundel was not the only destination in Sussex that Argus readers identified as a must-see.

Many people mentioned the South Downs National Park. One reader suggested, “Go for some lovely walks on the South Downs.” Chanctonbury Ring, Cissbury, Mount Caburm, and other places are my favourite places. And after a pint of Harveys at a classic bar.” Another stated, “The Camera Obscura in Foredown Tower, Portslade.” A truly unique vista of the Downs.

I hope it is still open for guests! “Google it, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the last Saturdays of the month, it says…” A third participant commented, “The South Downs are absolutely stunning.” Beautiful scenery, fantastic treks at any time of year!”
