Blackburn ‘lost’ town centre landmarks as seen from car park.

This snapshot from the mid-1960s shows three Blackburn town centre landmarks that have since disappeared.

The scaffolding for the new tower, which would be part of the Thwaites’ Star brewery development, can be seen on the top left.

The tower was dismantled in 2019. The top right corner of the shot shows Dutton’s Brewery, which was demolished in 1986 to make room for Morrison’s store.

The elegant entrance of the Odeon Cinema on Penny Street is also readily visible.

The Odeon opened in 1931, as the demand for moving pictures skyrocketed, complete with a cinema organ that rose up through a trapdoor on stage. It was renamed the Odeon in 1959 and closed in 1974.
