Blackburn Rovers defeat contributes to Southampton sacking.
Southampton became the latest Championship club to make a managerial change, with a defeat to Blackburn Rovers leading to Will Still’s departure.
The Saints manager has been fired after 13 Championship games. After losing 2-0 at home to Preston North End, they are now 21st in the Championship, one place above the relegation zone.
That represents a significant underachievement for any recently demoted Premier League club. Southampton made significant investments with the expectation of an instant return, but the results have been disappointing.
Rovers defeated them 2-1 at Ewood Park nine days ago, which was Still’s penultimate match.
They led against Rovers, but a second-half comeback cost them the game, prompting chants from the away end.
Still survived the week, but Saturday’s loss to PNE was the final straw for the Saints hierarchy; it was their third consecutive defeat.
According to group technical director Johannes Spors, “Will is a terrific individual who went above and beyond to improve performances and results.
“Ultimately, that procedure took longer than any of us would have preferred. We believe that by making a change now, we will have the best chance of turning things around this season and regaining our league position.
“I would like to thank Will, Rubén, Clément and Carl for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”
Tonda Eckert, the men’s under-21s head coach, will lead the club on an interim basis when they go to Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday evening.
