Blackburn special school drop off point and meadow get nod.
Councillors have approved plans to establish a new taxi/minibus pick-up and drop-off location at Blackburn’s largest special school.
The granted planning permission will also result in the creation of a new wildflower meadow at Newfield school. The decision by Blackburn with Darwen Council’s planning committee on Thursday night is the latest stage of a £2.5 million expansion plan.
In May, it approved the school’s new five-classroom building on Old Bank Lane in Shadsworth, near Royal Blackburn Hospital.
They have now been asked to grant permission for the wildflower meadow, as well as hardstanding for improved minibus and taxi drop-off facilities. The school provides specialised education for children and young people aged two to 19 years old.
The extension will create 65 new places for students. Gavin Prescott, planning manager, informed the committee that “this application involves the installation of new hardstanding for the provision of improved minibus and taxi drop-off facilities.”
“The entire site is used to provide a variety of educational services, including those for children with special needs. “Four new minibus parking bays would be created, along with a taxi drop-off zone.
“Although four small trees would be removed to allow for the proposals, this would be offset by new tree planting on the site and the inclusion of a grassland habitat (wildflower grassland/other neutral grassland) with greater habitat distinctiveness.
“The wildflower grassland would be a meadow mixture containing species that are characteristic of traditional meadows across a wide range of soil types.”
