Bradford City contract reward for Bobby Pointon’s progress

Bradford City contract reward for Bobby Pointon’s progress.

BOBBY Pointon’s new contract is a sign of respect for the young City talent.

Pointon signed an extension last week that will keep him at Valley Parade until the summer of 2027, with an option for an additional year. It was a reward for the local lad’s efforts to establish himself as a first-team regular.

Graham Alexander believes it was also the right decision to bring Pointon in line with his more senior teammates. “It was something we discussed over the summer, myself, Ryan (Sparks), and David (Sharpe), about where Bobby is and where we believe he can go.

“This is all new to him, but it is for a few players, and we also noticed a slight disparity in his wage compared to others. “That can happen at clubs when academy players emerge. We simply felt that Bobby deserved a better deal based on fairness.

Pointon has appeared 84 times since Mark Hughes signed him in 2023, including 50 in all competitions last season, when he scored eight goals. Alexander went on to say, “He is a young player, but he is not on trial, and he is not a youth-team player who has shown some promise in two or three games.

“He had a full season last year, and the season before that he showed real positive signs, especially after I came in halfway through the season.”

“Last season, I believe he played a significant role in what was a huge event for the club. “We believe he can continue working with us. Overall, it was the correct decision for us. “I know Bobby won’t get carried away with anything.

He will continue to have a strong work ethic and a desire to succeed, and he will be surrounded by supportive individuals. “I think it’s good to see young players, especially, earn their way into new contracts and staying at the club.”

Pointon and City were unable to break through Northampton in Saturday’s frustrating draw at Sixfields. The 21-year-old was one of five visitors sent off following a first-half altercation with Cobblers midfielder Cameron McGeehan.

“I thought the ref dealt with the whole game really well,” said Alexander. “It’s part of Bobby’s learning curve, but plenty of players receive a yellow card and then manage to stay disciplined for the rest of the game. “I thought it was good maturity from Bobby to not get involved in anything else.”
