BrewDog to shut Dundee city centre pub

BrewDog to shut Dundee city centre pub.

BrewDog has announced plans to close its Dundee location, along with nine others across the country.

Brewdog is planning to close its Dundee city centre pub. The Aberdeen-based chain has announced that its Panmure Street location will close on Saturday.

The Dundee pub is one of ten BrewDog locations closing this week, including the company’s flagship Aberdeen Gallowgate branch. Brewdog says it intends to “redeploy” some affected employees within the company.

The chain also operates pubs in Perth, St Andrews, and Stirling, which are not on the closure list.

BrewDog Dundee set to close

A BrewDog spokesperson stated, “We can confirm that following a review of our bar business, we have made the difficult decision to close 10 bars, which reflects a more focused strategy and a rationalisation of our bar footprint.”

“Despite our best efforts and the hard work of our teams, we have been unable to make these bars commercially viable. “This decision is more than just a reaction to the challenging UK hospitality market;

it is a proactive decision to refocus the bar division’s focus on long-term and profitable growth while accounting for ongoing industry challenges such as rising costs, increased regulation, and economic pressures.

“We are working hard to minimise the impact on our employees, and we anticipate redeploying many affected team members across the BrewDog network.

“We’re doing everything we can to help those who are leaving the company during this transition.

“We remain passionate and firmly committed to our bars, and optimistic about the future, as we still see significant long-term opportunity.” Brewdog CEO James Taylor sent a note to staff stating, “We have made the difficult decision to close 10 bars.

“This includes some venues with a rich history, such as Aberdeen, our first bar, and Camden, the first bar we opened in London.

“Despite our best efforts and the hard work of the teams in each of these bars, we have simply been unable to devise a formula to make these bars viable due to their size, location, and other constraints.

“After careful consideration, we have unfortunately concluded that there is no realistic prospect of making these venues commercially viable.”

“Keeping them open would put pressure on the overall business, making it difficult to invest where we know we can grow.

“This decision is not simply a response to the challenging UK hospitality market, but a proactive decision to redefine the bar division’s focus.”

According to the Unite Hospitality union, workers were only given a few days’ notice about the plans. According to a post on X by Unite Hospitality, BrewDog has announced that they will close ten flagship bars from Aberdeen to Camden as early as this Friday.

“In what universe is three days a morally (or legally) acceptable notice period for a proper redundancy consultation for the workers impacted?”
