Brighton councillor’s anger after newly resurfaced road dug up.
A councilman has requested that a recently resurfaced road be redone after two utility providers scraped up newly placed asphalt in separate locations.
Green councillor Pete West questioned the scheduling of gas and water works in Ditchling Road, Brighton, three days after the new road surface was laid.
Brighton & Hove City Council resurfaced Ditchling Road between Fiveways and the Upper Lewes Road, as well as the traffic signals on Viaduct Road.
However, on Thursday (20 November), there were two sets of traffic lights: one outside Downs Infant School, where Southern Water was repairing a water leak, and another for Southern Gas Networks near the corner of Bromley Road.
Cllr West, who represents Roundhill ward, stated that this was “frankly unbelievable news about Ditchling Road”.

He said: “We’ve been waiting so long for Labour’s promises to be fulfilled on resurfacing. It had become extremely rutted and unsafe, particularly for bicycles.
“A patchwork quilt will not suffice because the various joint lines will easily succumb to frost damage.
They must agree to machine re-lay an entire section all the way down.” Cllr West promised to hold Labour councillor Trevor Muten to his promise to restore the road surface.
Cllr Muten, the council’s cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure, stated that both utility firms were carrying out emergency repairs.
He stated, “We understand that the timing is unpleasant and disappointing, but these were unanticipated and necessary to ensure safety and important services.
“The council is working closely with both contractors to ensure the road surface is reinstated to a standard as close as possible to the recent resurfacing.”
