Brighton seafront lamp almost hits man walking underneath

Brighton seafront lamp almost hits man walking underneath.

A pedestrian narrowly avoided being struck by a lamp when it toppled to the ground along Brighton’s seafront.

The man, who prefers to remain anonymous, claimed he was “nearly decapitated” by a falling lamp unit while walking along Brighton’s Kings Road on Monday. He has urged the council to handle the “public health” issue.

The repair is projected to cost approximately £4 million and take several years to complete.

The Grade II listed lampposts, which have been damaged by years of exposure to weather and sea air, are an important element of the city’s heritage.

The resident stated that the lamp units appeared to have been mounted directly to the “rusted” columns.

After a “quick scan of the seafront,” he concluded that many were rotted at the connection place, and that the lamp’s design was “top heavy” and susceptible to severe winds.

Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport and municipal infrastructure at Brighton and Hove municipal Council, stated:

“This is being investigated as a priority, and professional contractors have already arrived on site to discover why this lamp came loose from the column.

“In terms of the age of the column from which the lamp disconnected, this was one of several placed as replacements in 2013, but plainly this should not be the case. “Once we know whether this incident was caused by a failure of the column, the lantern, or a vehicle impact, we will be able to determine the next steps.”

“We appreciate anyone experiencing a near miss or seeing this lamp come free will have concerns, but we would like to reassure residents we are taking swift action and that public safety is very much our focus.”
