Burst pipes Sheffield: City hit by wave of burst water pipes because of Cumberland Street incident

Burst pipes Sheffield: City hit by wave of burst water pipes because of Cumberland Street incident.

Yorkshire Water has disclosed that Sheffield has been hit by a secondary wave of burst pipes today, following last night’s burst on Cumberland Street in the city centre.

The business, which is working on repairs following yesterday’s burst water main near the bottom of The Moor, stated that the event directly affected other pipes. It comes at a time when the corporation has implemented a hosepipe ban due to water scarcity.

The company stated that yesterday’s incident was the cause of water delivery issues for consumers around the city last night. A Yorkshire Water spokeswoman stated that a burst main on Cumberland Street caused a temporary disruption of water for various postcodes.

The firm told The Star: “Our staff was able to restore supplies to all properties in the late evening, but the repair is still ongoing.

“A stretch of Cumberland Street will remain closed while the repairs are completed and reinstated. A signposted diversion is in place to ensure the safety of our staff, pedestrians, and road users.”

They went on to say, “Unfortunately, the first burst caused a number of smaller subsequent bursts as a result of pressure variations in the system.

“All customers have water, however some may suffer low pressure while we complete the repairs. Customers will observe us operating in the area throughout the day, and we will do our best to minimise disturbance.

Additional bursts have included one on Charlotte Road, which has resulted in the closure of a portion of the road in the early hours. Yorkshire Water says this is presently being fixed and will remain blocked until the road damage has been addressed.

They advise clients to run their tap for a brief amount of time if their water has become hazy.

“We’ll be meeting with highways after the initial repair is complete to assess consequential damage, and we’ll have a better idea of how long traffic management will be in place after that,” they informed us.

Cumberland Street remained closed this morning, but Eyre Street has reopened.
