Championship club confirm plans to build £3billion, 60,000-capacity ‘coliseum’ stadium with key feature used by Spurs.
Birmingham will soon have a new home, and it promises to be incredible.
Birmingham City has announced plans to build a 60,000-seat “coliseum” as their new stadium. The new stadium will feature a retractable pitch, similar to Tottenham’s innovative concept.
Club CEO Jeremy Dale detailed the incredible plan for the super stadium in the club’s 2024/25 annual review, with the stadium set to be the centrepiece of plans to develop a multibillion-pound Sports Quarter in the city’s east.
Blues owner Tom Wagner and NFL great Tom Brady, a minority shareholder in the club, are hoping the plans will help them on their way to becoming one of the Premier League’s big boys.
Dale stated, “The centrepiece of this £3 billion project is a 60,000-seat multi-purpose stadium, the likes of which have never been seen before.”
“The world’s top architects are competing for the contract to design the stadium, which will feature a retractable pitch to accommodate non-sporting events such as concerts.
The vision is for it to become an iconic’sporting coliseum’ that respects local heritage while also serving as an all-year location for sport, culture, leisure, entertainment, retail, and education. “We’ve been working on this for a year, with 75 consultants already contributing to the master plan and business plan. “It is extremely exciting.”
Plans for the Sports Quarter will be submitted in 2026, and if all goes well, the club hopes to have spades in the ground by 2028.
With plans to play a variety of sports at the new stadium, the club agreed to use a similar strategy to Tottenham, allowing them to use two surfaces.
Tottenham has successfully hosted NFL games on an artificial pitch that slides into place. It is wheeled in three sections on pallets propelled by 168 wheels.
Birmingham’s plan could see them compete with the Spurs to host NFL games in the future.
Tottenham’s retractable pitch consists of three sections, each weighing 3,000 tonnes. It has 33 turf trays that are seamlessly joined between segments.
The process is automated, allowing the groundskeeper to call in the pitch with the touch of a button.
Last season, Birmingham were promoted back to the Championship for the first time, finishing first in League One with a record 111 points.
They started pre-season well, defeating LaLiga side Seville 3-1. Birmingham have already been busy in the transfer window, signing ex-Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi and former Blues starlet Demarai Grey.
