2025 was the year of food and drink in Sheffield’s city centre, with two large pubs and a slew of eateries welcoming customers for the first time.
Sheffield Hallam University had the greatest impact on the skyline with a new campus, Forgemasters invested millions to restore the glory days of steel, and flats sprouted from the ground in response to a need for additional residents in the city centre.Here’s how Sheffield has changed in the last year.

1. Sheffield Hallam University
Sheffield Hallam University opened three new buildings off Howard Street in September, costing £140 million, to expand its City Campus.
University officials stated that they will give “outstanding” facilities for students and staff while also “delivering significant regeneration of a key gateway to the city centre.” | im

2. £20m Marriott hotel
The £20 million, 150-bed Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Catcliffe eventually opened in December following a two-year delay. Workers returned to the building in January after it had been abandoned for a year. | im

3. Forgemasters
Forgemasters is establishing a £350 million machining plant on Weedon Street that will house ’17 of the world’s largest and most advanced vertical turning lathes’. The enterprise will be nationalised in 2021 and will undergo a £1.3 billion renovation.

4. Spud Bros
Fargate hadn’t seen anything like it. More than 400 people waited in the rain for the debut of baked potato sensation Spud Bros. It was one of several new restaurants in Sheffield this year.Finn Smith
