Champions, Ohio (WKBN) – Two dead animals were discovered in Champion Township, prompting the filing of felony charges.

Jason Gribble, 46, is charged with two fifth-degree felony counts of prohibitions against companion animals. The charges stem from the deaths of a dog and cat discovered in a home in the 5000 block of Alva Ave.

NW on Thursday afternoon. According to a Champion Police report, a bank employee changing the locks on a vacant house called police after discovering a dead dog in a cage and a dead cat on the basement floor.

The home was filled with old mail addressed to Jason Gribble, and Gribble was listed as the owner.

Neighbours told investigators they hadn’t seen Gribble or the dog at the house in a while.

Police later spoke with Gribble over the phone, who stated that he was not in the area but that the animals had been dead for a long time and that he was unable to bury them due to the ground being frozen and his health issues, according to the report.

“This was completely preventable. This person, whether he is mentally ill or not, this is never good. It’s never good for us when we have to bring that animal out knowing how bad that suffered,” said Fabian Pike, AWL’s chief humane officer.

Pike says that during the investigation, they discovered that Gribble’s friends and family offered to rehome the dog, but he declined.

Gribble faces charges filed in Warren Municipal Court on Friday.
