Charlton 3-0 Blackburn – Carey corker helps Addicks to win.

Charlton Athletic defeated Blackburn Rovers 2-0, their second EFL Championship win in a row thanks to goals from Macaulay Gillesphey and Sonny Carey.

Both enter this game after experiencing dramatic games for different causes the previous time out.

Tanto Olaofe scored in the last minutes to give Charlton a 1-0 victory over struggling Sheffield United, their first at Bramall Lane since October 2011. For Blackburn, the drama occurred both on and off the pitch.

Despite leading 1-0 at Ewood Park and having Ipswich Town down to ten men, the game was called off in the 80th minute owing to wet surface.

On Friday, the EFL ordered that the game must be replayed in its entirety. Nathan Jones’ team had only lost one of their previous 18 games in the Valley, a 1-0 defeat to Leicester in August.

However, they had only won one of their last six home games against Blackburn, drawing two and losing three. This would be the pair’s first encounter since February 2020, when Rovers won 2-0 thanks to goals from John Buckley and current Chelsea defender Tosin.

It had been a cagey 30 minutes until Charlton broke the stalemate on 31 minutes with a stunning header from Macaulay Gillesphey. James Bree blasted the free kick to the back post, and Gillesphey headed it across the goal and into the bottom right corner.

Charlton had a fantastic chance to go ahead 2-0 at the conclusion of the first half, but Rovers keeper Balazs Toth saved it from close range. Charlton dominated the first half, with an XG of 0.65 against Blackburn’s 0.22.

In the opening ten minutes of the second half, Blackburn began to settle into the game and increase the pace. They hadn’t put Thomas Kaminski in the Charlton goal to the test yet, however.

Charlton recovered the ball on the edge of the area after Blackburn’s botched goal kick, and they created an opening, but Tyreece Campbell blasted over from 7 yards out.

On 59 minutes, Campbell nearly scored a spectacular solo goal, getting the ball back and cutting inside from just outside the box. Rovers’ keeper, Toth, was riveted to the spot, but the curving shot went just wide of the post.

Following the pressure in the early stages of the second half, Blackburn were unable to hold possession of the ball, with the Addicks pressing excellently and just missing the final touch in front of the goal.

70 minutes in, it should have been 2-0; Sonny Carey’s initial shot was saved by Toth, and the rebound fell to Reece Burke, who inexplicably fired over into the Covered End of the Valley.

In the 80th minute, Charlton finally doubled their lead in spectacular way; the ball ends up with Sonny Carey outside the box, and he lashes his shot into the corner, where Toth could not get near it.

In the conditions of the game, the 2-0 lead was well-deserved, and Charlton should have scored two or three more goals in the second half alone. Charlton extended their lead to 3-0 in the final minute, with loanee James Bree scoring after assisting on the opening goal.

His shot was blasted into the bottom corner. The final score was 3-0, a fantastic success for Charlton, who now sit seventh in the Championship.

They are now preparing for two away games, the first on Tuesday at Derby County and the second next Saturday at Preston.
