Charlton Athletic sent clear transfer demand – It’ll ease potential Godden and Leaburn issue

Though Nathan Jones’ club seems to be on course to stay in the Championship in their first season back since 2019–20, Charlton Athletic’s impressive summer transfer window work has occasionally gone overlooked.

Blackpool’s Sonny Carey and Rob Apter have joined a midfield that already consists of Greg Docherty and Luke Berry, and Amari’i Bell, Reece Burke, and Joe Rankin-Costello have strengthened the backline.

However, while Apter has the ability to provide in attacking areas, the only out-and-out striker to arrive at The Valley this summer is Tanto Olaofe, and while the 25-year-old possesses plenty of strength and pace, he is unproven at Championship level and scored only eight goals in League One last season.

Sam White, a Charlton fan analyst for FLW, thinks that in order to support Matty Godden, another goal striker ought to be signed before the transfer window closes.

White was quite explicit about his transfer demands when asked by Football League World if any positions needed to be improved. According to the player, “it has to be a striker.”

“I think we’ve done a great job with our business so far. “All we need is a striker and goals,” the statement reads. “We tried to be clever and went under the radar, and I think we did very well.”

Tyrese Campbell, Miles Leaburn, and Tanto Olaofe could easily adapt to the new league, but White thinks a fresh acquisition will ease the burden. Matty Godden, a former Coventry City striker, is the only striker at The Valley with Championship experience.

He later remarked, “Godden has shown himself in the Championship, but I don’t think he’ll score more than 10 or 15 goals.”

“We would like to sign someone who can also contribute 10 to 15 goals, if not more, because you need others to chip in and it will put a lot of pressure on Campbell and Leaburn.”

“That would be on my wish list because, as we saw last season, the defense is pretty strong and the midfield can play well when it’s on its day, but you need someone to score the game-winning goal when you’re depending on shutting out teams.”

“I don’t think we can rely on an inexperienced player at Championship level, Miles Leaburn, and an older Matty Godden for that.”

Charlton should prioritize goal strikers before the transfer window closes.

Nathan Jones signals to Charlton Athletic fans

Matty Godden, who will turn 34 before the new season begins, scored 14 goals in 75 appearances during his two seasons in the second division prior to joining Charlton last summer.

According to Transfermarkt, Matty Godden is in the Championship.
Season Appearances Goals
2020/21 23 6
2021/22 24 12
2022/23 30 8
2023/24 35 6

Even though he scored 22 goals across all competitions in League One last season, it could be dangerous to rely solely on the former Coventry City player to score goals regularly in the Championship.

Charlton finished seventh in League One with 43 goals given up last season. Nathan Jones has promised that his defense will be hard to break through next season, even though the competition will get harder and the Addicks are predicted to give up more.

In a similar vein, their strikers will have a harder time scoring against more formidable defenders the next season. Their 67 goals from the previous season were enough to put them in the top 10 of League One’s goalscoring records, but they will need a more formidable front line this time around if they want to return to the Championship.

This is not to say that Nathan Jones does not have a wealth of talented young players in the attacking areas. Daniel Kanu and Kaheim Dixon are both promising 20-year-olds who are prepared to join the regular squad at The Valley, and Apter, Campbell, and Leaburn are all reliable first-team options who are 22 years of age or younger.

However, as a recently promoted team, you have to make compromises to continue in the division, thus the Addicks should prioritize finding a consistent goal scorer before the summer transfer window ends on September 1.
