Charlton Athletic tipped to beat Celtic and Preston North End to Premier League transfer

Charlton Athletic tipped to beat Celtic and Preston North End to Premier League transfer.

Nathan Jones is likely to add the youthful Chelsea striker to his team in a deadline-day transfer.

Charlton Athletic are expected to outbid Scottish Premiership club Celtic and Championship rivals for Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana on loan. The 22-year-old, who has four Premier League goals, is surplus to requirements at Chelsea and is poised to leave the club on a late loan deal.

Links to the Addicks surfaced earlier today, with Preston North End also rumoured. Since then, Celtic have been linked with a move for the midfielder and were briefly regarded as frontrunners.

Mark Hendry, a Scottish writer, reported on a Celtic loan proposal after Ajax hijacked the club’s move for Anderlecht player Kasper Dolberg.

However, transfer specialist Pete O’Rourke took to social media platform X shortly before the deadline, claiming that Charlton Athletic are the most likely to lead the race.

He further said: “Charlton have now emerged as favourites to land Chelsea forward David Datro Fofana ahead of Preston on loan.”

The Addicks have only scored two goals in their first four Championship games this season as they adjust to life in the second tier. Fofana started last season on loan with Turkish club Goztepe, but was recalled early due to a hamstring injury.

Addicks still without Matty Godden

Chelsea agreed to purchase Fofana from Molde FK for a reputed £10 million in 2022, although he has only appeared in four first-team games for the Blues.

His most notable season occurred while on loan at Burnley at the end of the 2023/24 season. The Clarets struggled and were relegated, but Fofana received recognition for his efforts, scoring four goals in 15 Premier League outings.

Former Burnley manager Victor Kompany said of the player after he scored a brace against Fulham:

“He (Fofana) was aggressive, wanted to win every duel, he’s very fast, and it’s a good starting point for him, and we’re fortunate to have recruited him.”

The signing of Fofana would be a boon for Charlton Athletic, who have been without talisman Matty Godden this season. The striker is absent after undergoing’minor’ knee surgery over the summer.

Godden, who scored 22 goals in all competitions last season, did not play in preseason and has yet to make an appearance.

In other news, Charlton Athletic’s manager criticises a QPR referee decision and offers a clue about the Peterborough United trade battle.
