Charlton Athletic were robbed blind by Rangers – Addicks must always hate it.
Charlton Athletic were still enjoying their promotion from League One when they lost midfielder Joe Aribo to Rangers, a decision they would later rue.
The Valley had a festive atmosphere at the end of the 2018-19 season.Charlton Athletic had recently sealed a return to the Championship after a three-year hiatus, beating Sunderland 2-1 in the League.
One play-off final provided a glimpse of hope after years of failure following their relegation from the Premier League in 2007.
Returning to the second flight necessitated squad strengthening, as 15 new players joined the club during the summer transfer window. However, there were some departures that summer, including one of the major components of their promotion push, future Nigerian international Joe Aribo, who scored a decisive goal in their play-off semi-final against Doncaster Rovers.
Charlton couldn’t even console themselves with a handsome transfer fee after the player declined a new contract and moved north of the border.
The compensation agreed upon with Rangers proved to be a pitiful consolation for the loss of a player who went on to thrive not just in the Scottish Premiership, but also in the Premier League of England.
Aribo shone over three seasons at The Valley following a testing start to his career there
Joe Aribo, born in London in 1996, was identified by Charlton in 2015 while playing for Staines Town in the Isthmian League and signed with the club in September of that year.
professional career got off to a rocky start. Charlton was relegated from the Championship at the end of his first season with the club, placing 22nd in the table.
However, Aribo’s obvious potential allowed him to withstand a player purge as the club attempted to adjust to the financial realities of relegation to League One.
He didn’t make a single appearance for them during the relegation season, but his patience paid off over the next three years.
The Addicks struggled in their first year back in League One, ending 13th, but improved significantly the following season, finishing sixth before losing in the play-off semi-finals over two legs to Shrewsbury Town.
Over the first two seasons, Aribo was gradually integrated into The Valley’s first squad, earning 19 League games in 2016-17 and 25 the following season.
He signed a contract extension with them in December 2016, committing himself to the club for another two and a half years.
But it wasn’t until Lee Bowyer took over as caretaker manager in March 2018, following Karl Robinson’s departure, that his importance really began to develop, especially after Bowyer’s post was declared permanent on September 6, 2018. Charlton shone brightly in 2019, losing only two of their first twenty-one games and ending third in the table with 88 points, trailing only champions Luton Town and Barnsley.
And in the first leg of the play-off semi-finals, Aribo scored their second goal in a 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers.
Charlton eventually advanced to Wembley after losing the home second leg 3-2 but winning the penalty shootout.
The play-off final against Sunderland was contested in front of just over 76,000 people at Wembley Stadium, and Charlton got off to the worst possible start when Naby Sarr scored an own goal in the fifth minute, giving their opponents an early lead. But they fought back.
Ben Purrington tied the game ten minutes before halftime, and Patrick Bauer scored a thrilling winner in the fourth minute of extra time to send the Addicks back to the Championship.
Aribo was a hit at Rangers, but he’s now back playing in the Championship again
Joe Aribo’s contract with Charlton expired that summer, and they were unable to persuade him to stay. The allure of a move to Glasgow giants Rangers proved too strong, and he departed the club to join Ibrox.
The Addicks were entitled to compensation for his departure because he was under 23 years old at the time, but they only received £300,000.
But Aribo’s decision to relocate to Scotland was validated in various ways. Only a few months after leaving The Valley, he was called up to the Nigeria international squad.
He’s made 34 appearances for them since. He also had success at the club level.
In 2021, he was a member of the Rangers team that won the Scottish Championship for the first time in a decade, and at the end of the following season, he was a member of the team that reached the Europa League final before losing on penalty kicks to Eintracht Frankfurt after scoring in a 1-1 draw.
Joe Aribo left Ibrox in the summer of 2022 to join Southampton in England’s Premier League.
While Rangers will be disappointed to have lost such an accomplished player, they may take comfort in knowing that they sold a player for whom they paid £300,000 for £6 million, with add-ons raising the total to £10 million.
Charlton’s resurgence proved to be fleeting. They were demoted from the Championship after just one season and will not return to the second tier until 2025.
The club had been handled chaotically for years by a succession of incompetent owners, and it wasn’t until their 2023 sale to Global Football Partners that they achieved real stability off the pitch again.
Joe Aribo, who joined Leicester City on loan at the end of the January 2026 transfer window, is now struggling to prevent relegation from the Championship due to the club’s previous financial mismanagement.
With Charlton Athletic seeming like a stronger bet to stay up at the end of the season than the Foxes right now, a return to the club where he began his career does not appear out of the question.
Still only 29 years old, such a return would undoubtedly be a beautiful way to conclude a playing career that began in such trying circumstances. Addicks supporters would undoubtedly welcome him back with open arms.
