Charlton Athletic’s five most expensive sales include a Europa League champion and Intertoto Cup winner
Charlton Athletic’s five most expensive sales include a Europa League champion and Intertoto Cup winner.
Charlton Athletic are preparing for their first season back in the Championship after a six-year absence, this time in League One.
They earned their place back in the Championship by defeating Leyton Orient in the League One play-off final, which piqued the interest of their manager, Nathan Jones, who was later pursued by Cardiff City to become their new manager earlier this summer.
As the club prepares for life in the second tier alongside fellow League One departures Birmingham City and Wrexham, making a significant impact will necessitate astute transfer strategy.
Charlton does not have the same transfer budget as the other two newly promoted League One clubs, so they will need to make a number of sales to bring in some new faces.

However, it is unlikely that any of their departures this season will result in fees comparable to the club’s five most expensive sales.
EFL Analysis presents the five most expensive sales the club has ever made, as reported by Transfermarkt.
5. Danny Mills – £5.2 million
Danny Mills joined Charlton in the summer of 1998 and stayed for only one season, but he made a significant impact that season.
The full back helped Charlton win promotion that season, as they defeated Sunderland in the playoff final.

Mills would leave Charlton that summer to join Leeds United, who were spending big at the time, and the full back was one of the players the Yorkshire club decided to sign.
Following his departure from Charlton, Mills went from strength to strength, making 19 appearances for England since his debut in 2001.
4. Andy Reid – £5.2 million
The former Ireland international spent a season and a half with Charlton before moving to Sunderland for £5.2 million.
Andy Reid was a member of Charlton’s Premier League relegation squad and spent half a season in the Championship before being signed by Roy Keane in January 2008.

He only appeared in 40 matches for Charlton, scoring nine goals, but he performed admirably throughout his time at the Valley, with Reid captaining the club during this period.
3. Ademola Lookman – £7.6 million
Everton spent a lot of money to bring Ademola Lookman to Merseyside from Charlton, considering the London club was in League One at the time.
would take two seasons to break into the Everton first team; however, in his third season, he played an important role for the club.
