Cleverley hopes Finn will sign Argyle deal.
Plymouth Argyle manager Tom Cleverley hopes the club can reach a professional agreement with promising teenager Tegan Finn.
The 17-year-old winger started only his second game for Argyle in the 3-2 Carabao Cup victory over Queens Park Rangers.
However, he impressed with his incisive running, causing problems for the Championship team’s defence for much of the evening.
Finn is still on an academy deal, but Cleverley hopes this will change: “Those conversations are happening. They were happening before Tegan’s outstanding performance on Tuesday,” he explained.
“We’re eager to tie Tegan down to a professional contract. I believe that staying with us and developing under our supervision is the best thing for his future.
“My top priority is to win games for this football club, but I also place a high value on developing the club’s young players, and Tegan is one of them. “We could really go on an exciting journey with Tegan, and I believe that being with us would be best for his future.
“We think a lot of him, I thought he showed how good he can be on Tuesday and he’s a live player for us, he’s not just a young potential player, he’s a real key part of this squad now.”
Finn appeared four times last season, starting the 4-0 Boxing Day loss to Coventry City under Wayne Rooney.
He made his season debut as a substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Bolton Wanderers, before starting on Tuesday night.
Cleverley believes Finn has the maturity to play at the senior level, despite his young age. “I thought against Bolton he came in and did great in difficult circumstances,” claims Cleverley.
“I thought Tuesday, let’s not forget, he was playing against a first-team player, Harvey Vale, who is not a young QPR player, but is a first-team player, so I thought he handled that challenge very well.
“Tegan’s got a good head on his shoulders, he’s not going to get too ahead of himself, he’s got a healthy confidence about him and it’s the start of an exciting journey.”
