Crowborough residents take part in another weekend of action.
Campaigners opposing proposals to lodge asylum seekers at a military barracks have disregarded claims that the scheme will be delayed, claiming they will seek judicial review this week.
The Home Office has identified Crowborough training camp as a potential location to host 540 lone male migrants.
Residents of the town took to the streets for the fourth consecutive weekend to protest the plan, despite the scheme’s delays.
The Home Office stated that while it was still “continuing to accelerate plans” to relocate asylum seekers to the Crowborough military facility, it would wait until it was “fully operational and safe”.
Buses carrying asylum seekers were due to arrive in Crowborough on Monday. Campaigners have raised more than £50,000 to bankroll their legal battle to the proposal, which they think is still underway.
Kim Bailey, Chairwoman of Crowborough Shield, dismissed rumours of delays as a “smokescreen”. “This is what they want us to believe, so we let our guard down,” she told protesters on Sunday.
On Sunday morning, almost 2,000 people braved the cold to march from the camp to a village green, where they were informed that Crowborough Shield had filed an application for a judicial review, which may come this week.
“We think December 3 will be the day they move in,” Ms Bailey added.
“Please, don’t let your guard down.
“The reports of a delay are what they are attempting to make us believe. “We need to get this in front of a judge.” On Sunday morning, protesters marched from the camp passed council headquarters, chanting “Shame on you.” The audience requested Councillor Rachel Millward’s resignation.
Wealden District Council’s deputy leader also serves as the Green Party’s candidate for mayor of Sussex and Brighton. “No accommodation, deportation” was another chant from the audience.
Organisers claim they will march every weekend until the Home Office’s plan is abandoned.
