The multi-story parking park of Coventry’s former IKEA facility will be dismantled. It is one of several planned improvements to the building outlined in a new planning application.

According to CoventryLive, plans to transform the well-known blue building into a cultural hub have been modified since its inception. It came when ISG, the contractor who was supposed to complete the job, went bankrupt.

John Graham Construction was chosen to take over, but this has resulted in some significant planned alterations to the design. These improvements, which include tearing down the three-story car park, have now been accepted.

According to an officer report published on the council website, the changes to the client brief were in response to future-proofing the ground floor of the building and providing more flexibility for potential tenants.

The consented scheme assumed the retention of the three-story car park to the north of the scheme. “Advice from the contractor suggested its removal would have a cost benefit and allow greater useability of the ground floor areas as a result.”

Following approval of the adjustments, which are technically referred to as variations to the planning consent, a number of conditions were imposed.

One of them includes the client building an additional 168 bike spots as the necessity and demand for the cycle store warrants.

“The modification of Condition 2 to change the project is regarded acceptable, and the scheme is judged to remain acceptable in terms of principle, design, and impact on surrounding properties. The officer report finishes with “ecology and highways”.
