Dozens of Dundee tenants seeking somewhere to live after ‘building bulge’ evacuation

Dozens of Dundee tenants seeking somewhere to live after ‘building bulge’ evacuation.

Emergency crews descended on Hawkhill in the city centre. Following an emergency evacuation, dozens of Dundee tenants are looking for alternate accommodations.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to Hawkhill on Thursday afternoon following reports of a bulge on the side of a structure.

Around 40 people were evacuated from the affected flats, while the Tinsmith bar located below had to close until further notice.

There is presently no indication when residents will be able to return home.

Dundee City Council liaising with Hawkhill landlords

A representative for Dundee City Council stated: “Following reports received on Thursday, building standards officials and city engineers commenced an assessment of the Hawkhill home.

“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was initially asked to assist. “Based on preliminary investigations, it was determined for safety reasons that the flats should be evacuated, and the council has been in contact with the private landlords who hold the flats.

“The Tinsmith’s operators have also been instructed to keep the bar closed for the time being.

“In the interests of public safety, under the Building (Scotland) Act, the council has hired emergency contractors and road closures have been implemented.

Investigations are ongoing, and council officers are evaluating the scope of remedial work that may be required.

The Courier phoned Easylets, which handles numerous units in the damaged building, but there was no further information available at this time.
