Dundee flats evacuated and pub closed until further notice after building emergency.
On Thursday, emergency services responded to an incident in Hawkhill.
A Dundee bar has been shuttered till further notice following an emergency event that required occupants of the flats above to evacuate.
On Thursday, about midday, emergency crews, including police and firefighters, were called to Hawkhill. The activity concentrated on the flats above the Tinsmith pub.
According to its owners, the pub is presently closed due to scaffolding in front of it and will remain thus until further notice.
Tinsmith closed for ‘foreseeable future’
Gerry Moonie, operations manager for the pub, which is owned by local businessman Jimmy Marr, told The Courier that they do not yet know when it will be permitted to operate.
The shutdown, even if temporary, is expected to cost the company thousands of pounds.
It also means that up to a dozen employees may be unemployed in the meantime, however the business owners may reassign them to other hospitality venues throughout the city.
Gerry stated that “Dundee City Council has now erected scaffolding, and access to the building is unsafe.” “They are trying to keep us in the loop as much as possible but it looks like it’s going to be next week before we get a full picture of what’s going to happen.” Jimmy Marr stated, “The main thing is that no one has been injured.”
“It’s potentially a disaster for us businesswise at this time of year with all the students coming back to the city and organising events etc but we can’t take the risk of anyone being injured or worse.”
‘Huge bulge’ appears in Hawkhill building
As the tragedy proceeded, Jimmy stated: “A massive bulge has appeared in the wall of the building above The Tinsmith.
“Around 40 people have been evacuated from flats.”
Andrew Robson of The Courier was on the scene as emergency services arrived. He stated, “When I arrived, two fire engines were on the scene outside The Tinsmith.
The road has been cordoned off, and there appears to be a bulge on the building’s exterior. “Firefighters and council personnel entered the building before leaving shortly after.
“The building remains sealed off while inspections are conducted. “Residents have been told it’s unlikely they will get back in the building today.”
Dundee street sealed off and flats above pub evacuated
Two kids stated, “We were walking by shortly after noon when the fire department arrived.
“They swiftly shut off the roadway and evacuated the flats. “Firefighters have been going in and out of the building, and they put up the high-reach appliance before quickly bringing it down.”
Two neighbours from the adjoining building reported, “About 20 minutes ago, we heard a loud tap on the door and were informed we had five minutes to go.
“Firefighters were inside to ensure we got out safely. We have packed overnight bags. “We don’t know much beyond what we observe. There is a visible bulge in the building.
“It doesn’t look good, to be honest.”
A representative for Scottish Fire and Rescue Services said: “We received a call at 11.50 a.m. about loose brickwork at a structure in Hawkhill.
“We have one appliance and a height appliance there at the moment.” The Tinsmith’s Instagram story read: “We have been advised by the council to close till further notice. We will keep you updated if and when circumstances change.”
According to a Dundee City Council representative, “We are currently investigating and liaising with partner organisations.”
